INTRODUCTION
A
profession is defined as “a calling requiring
specialized knowledge and often long and intensive
preparation including instruction in skills and methods
as well as in the scientific, historical, or scholarly
principles underlying such skills and methods,
maintaining by force of organization or concerted
opinion, high standards of achievement and conduct and
committing its members to continue study and to a kind
of work which has for its prime purpose the rendering of
a public service”.
Librarianship is definitely a profession which demands
specialized knowledge and skills. Its study is based on
systematic theory which delineates and supports the
skills that characterize the profession. It has its
professional organization which promotes excellence in
the work of members, influences public sentiments and
support, and tries to raise the dignity and social
standing of the profession.
