INTRODUCTION
Kuriakose Elias College, Mannanam, Kottayam, Kerala
State started functioning in the Year 1964 to
commemorate Blessed Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara.
Fr. Chavara was the founder of the CMI (Carmalites of
many Immaculate) congrigation an Order of Roman Cathalic
Church. He was a Poet and an ardent lover of Malayalam
Language and literature; a missionary who believed in
secular values and uplift of the poor and downdrawden.
HISTORY
The History of the Malayalam Dept. begins in1964, Prof.
O. Luka was the first Head of the Department. He served
the dept. from 1964 to 1988. The scope of instructional
activities enlarged as the Degree course in Eco,
Eng.,Phy., Che., and Bot. started from the year 1967.
Subsequently Mr. T. V. Varkey, a wellknown Novelist and
Shortstory writer in Malayalam joined the dept. Prof. O.
Luka served as member of Legislative Assembly, Kerala
State, three times during a period from 1970 to 1980.
During that period Prof. T.V. Varkey acted as the H.O.D.
Later Degree courses in Zoology and Commerce started and
more members joined the Dept., Prof. T. V. Varkey
retired on March 1993. Prof. P.P. Joseph, P.
Ramachandran Nair, J. Mathew, V. J. Sebastian and
JoysKutty Joseph joined the Dept. in the course of time.
Prof. Ramchandran Nair retired on 31 March 2005 as the
Head of the dept. Since then Dr. J. Mathew is the Head.
When the PreDegree courses were seperated from college,
the student strength diminished to half size. Now there
are only 3 teachers with 32 periods per week.
From the very begining to about three and a half
decades Malayalam was taught as a second language. In
2009 with the introduction of choice Based Credit
Semester System (CBCSS) language study got recognition
at par with the other subjects and courses. Degree
Course is Renamed as Degree Programme. In this discourse
Malayalam is labelled as ‘Additional Language.’
Eventhough Malayalam was taught a second Language only
many talented students chosed or select Mother Tongue
for their higher studies. Some of them became
distinguished personalities in the cultural, acadamic,
artistic, scenerio of Kerala State. In that way this
Dept. have a fruitful successful history.
